Legacy Stories

My wife Krista and I are strong believers in the Village concept, and we are active volunteers and members of the Villages of San Mateo County (VSMC). The supportive relationships that develop and grow within our Village community are key in combating isolation and enriching our lives as we all age together.

During the process of updating our will and trust, we decided to add a legacy donation from our estate to be distributed to VSMC after we’ve passed. This gift demonstrates our faith in the Village movement as a long-term strategy to support neighbors as they age in place.

A legacy gift is one of longevity -- its impact will outlive us, and this is true peace of mind.

After retiring with a secure financial future, I turned my attention to what I could do to give back by using my time, talent and passion for good causes. In 2013, I stumbled onto a small group of like-minded folks who were starting this “new thing” called a Village. Eleven years later, here I am, integrally immersed in the Villages of San Mateo County as a leader (Chair of Sequoia Village), an active volunteer (Office Volunteer Lead), and as a Social Member. I have grown to deeply appreciate what it means to aging adults to lead active lives with a little support and a lot of community. I financially support VSMC on an annual basis, but when I am gone and no longer able to make annual donations, I want to continue my support of VSMC through a legacy donation

It’s easy to make a pledge through a trust. This has some tax advantages and can be adjusted in the future if circumstances change. With that in place, I feel satisfied knowing I’m helping to keep VSMC vibrant for the generations of seniors that will follow me.

This work is important – it helps individuals -- it brings people together by building community --and it needs to continue. “Legacy” -- what a vital word!
